Puyallup's Pioneer Park Pavilion
City of Puyallup Parks and Recreation Department
Puyallup, Washington
In an effort to revitalize Puyallup's downtown, the City has started a program of construction centered around Pioneer Park. The first completed project is a new library on the park's Western edge. Pioneer Park Pavilion is the second project and lies at the park's Southern end. The Pavilion is designed to house Puyallup's Farmers Market and activities such as concerts, dances, family reunions, etc. In all, the project comprises 12,500 square feet.
Pioneer Park Pavilion forms a Southern edge and backdrop to the park, which in concert with the library on the Western edge reinforces Pioneer Park's role as Puyallup's downtown Living Room. The facility is organized into two brick "bookends", (housing support space and a separate retail shell) with a multipurpose building between. The bookends recall the library and Puyallup's downtown buildings while the multipurpose building is a simple and durable shed tilted up to the park in a welcoming and expansive gesture. The long North and South faces of the facility consist of large glass overhead doors. During good weather, the overhead doors are opened transforming the building to a flow-through pavilion which functions as an extension of the park. TCF also completed Puyallup's third project, a mixed-use building on the park's Northwest corner.
