RiverCities Transit Center Longview, WA

Infrastructure with Intention

RiverCities Transit Center redefines what a small urban transit hub can be. Within less than one acre of industrial downtown Longview, the 4,190 square foot building and plaza transform a historically strained site into a place of clarity, safety, and civic presence.

Designed to withstand constant public use, the project positions dignity not as an amenity, but as infrastructure.

Environment Influences Behavior

Order guides movement. The previous configuration forced buses to cross paths while pedestrians moved through their drive lanes. Safety relied on vigilance rather than design. Simple reorganization establishes single directional bus flow, separating vehicles from riders and creating a central plaza that restores order to the site.

Transparency replaces concealment. Shelters remain open and visible. Sightlines extend across the plaza. Landscaping is restrained and durable. Each move is calibrated to encourage positive behavior while maintaining operational efficiency.

Function and care coexist. The building’s gabled form introduces a familiar, human-scaled silhouette. Warm terra cotta brick grounds the structure with civic permanence. Subtle shifts at each end expand visual supervision, reinforcing security through openness rather than fortification.

The System Behind the Schedule

Transit centers are public amenities as well as workplaces. While riders experience clear wayfinding, durable materials, and open views to arriving buses, drivers and staff also appreciate thoughtfully appointed offices, break rooms, wellness spaces, and a private outdoor patio to offer moments of restoration within demanding shifts.

Clarity, Resilience and Respect

As gathering points for people of many backgrounds, transit centers play an essential role in the life of a flourishing community, shaping public transportation into a safe, welcoming, reliable, and equitable mobility choice.

What was once cold hardscape is now a structured, welcoming crossroads — a civic space that restores trust in public service through thoughtful design.
