Carefully Updating a Cherished Cornerstone

Built in 1922 through the collaboration of fourteen school districts, the historic Union High School became known as “Old Main”—the enduring cornerstone of Mount Vernon High School campus. When TCF, in partnership with Lydig as GC/CM, began the renovation of Old Main, the effort expanded into something larger. Together with the District, the team stepped back to look at the entire campus, identifying opportunities to strengthen connections and improve function. The result was not just the thoughtful restoration of a landmark, but the creation of a second renewed facility—relieving operational pinch points while establishing a more welcoming gateway to the school.

Old Main's Major Upgrades Respect Function, History

  • Restored brick facade, new windows and roofing protect building longevity and occupant comfort
  • New stair towers ease student circulation, reinforce seismic stability
  • Restored grandeur in auditorium increases seating capacity, improves lighting and sound systems
  • Updated classrooms are more comfortable/functional: new finishes, better daylighting, improved ventilation
  • Rejuvenated terrazzo floors, period-appropriate doors, trim, corridor lighting maintain the period aura

Positive Impact Campus-Wide

In addition to the full renovation of Old Main, the project transformed the former gym into a dedicated administration building. Relocating this department freed space within Old Main for much-needed classrooms—one of the school’s top priorities. The new administration center now anchors the campus, creating a clear and welcoming main entry that frames a revitalized courtyard, as the metaphorical heart of the school. Taken together, these improvements increased visibility and security while offering a more inviting place for students to gather and connect. The completed project marked a fresh chapter for the campus—honoring its history while shaping a stronger, more unified learning environment.

A Whole Greater Than the Sum of its Parts

  • Removed: the boiler room module that made the school's east façade turn its back toward the campus
  • Added: stair towers to improve accessibility, visibility, and seismic resistance
  • Fixed: plaza/courtyard improvements create a better-defined sense of place

Framing a New Beginning

The former gym provides a new space for the high school's administration department, as a step toward helping reorganize classrooms campus-wide. This change in use more proudly – and clearly – welcomes students, staff and guests to its ceremonial front door.

Soaring Interior Spaces

The building houses new offices, conferencing and workspace. Enlarged windows to increase daylight and views for occupants; and incorporated seismic upgrades while improving electrical and low-voltage systems.
