Oakland Secondary School Tacoma, WA

Restoring a Landmark, Reimagining Opportunity

Built in 1912, Oakland Secondary School has stood as a landmark in Tacoma’s South End for more than a century. Listed on the City of Tacoma Register of Historic Places, the school represents both architectural heritage and community pride. When voters approved a district wide bond in 2020, Tacoma Public Schools embraced the opportunity to renew Oakland with intention, preserving its character while reshaping it to support today’s learners.

Honoring History Through Purposeful Design

The renovation began with a clear design question: how can a historic structure continue to serve evolving educational needs without losing its identity. Brick, sandstone, and wooden window frames were carefully restored to maintain the building’s civic presence. At the same time, interior spaces were reorganized to introduce light filled classrooms, flexible corridors, and gathering areas that encourage collaboration and adaptability.

Seismic upgrades and structural reinforcements were integrated with care, strengthening life safety while respecting historic proportions and detailing. New ramps, elevators, and security features were designed not simply for compliance, but to create a school that feels accessible, welcoming, and secure for every student and staff member.

Expanding Use, Opportunity and Support

Now serving grades 6 through 12, the building supports flexible learning pathways including Tacoma Online and Tacoma Flex programs. Spaces were shaped to accommodate individualized pacing, alternative schedules, and credit recovery, ensuring the building responds to the diverse ways students learn and succeed.

Available to all, the new cafeteria opens directly to the courtyard, bringing in natural daylight and creating an easy indoor-outdoor connection that students use throughout the day. A variety of seating options, including flexible tables, booths, and bar-top seating, supports different preferences and group sizes, creating a well-organized, adaptable space that students genuinely enjoy.

On-site services include a MultiCare clinic and daycare, reinforcing Oakland’s role as a student support and community resource, extending its impact beyond the classroom.

A Landmark Prepared for the Future

When Oakland reopened in autumn 2025, it reflected more than restoration. It demonstrated how thoughtful design can align preservation with performance, and tradition with innovation. By strengthening the structure, modernizing systems, and reimagining learning environments, the project secures the school’s place in Tacoma’s future while honoring its past.
